CHAPTER TWELVE
Creating your own essential oil blend can be an immensely satisfying and rewarding experience. There are several methods for creating essential oil blends, based on your usage. In this book, four techniques for blending will be discussed: Blending by Notes, Blending by Botany, Blending by Chemistry, and Blending by Effect.
Which method you choose will depend on your desired results. You may want to create an aromatic blend for diffusing in your home and choose your oils according to their botany family. Or, you might want to whip up a batch of essential oils to add to your homemade soap or candle recipe and are looking for something to energize you, in which case you might select your oils by their effects. Really, the possibilities are endless when it comes to blending and frankly, there truly isn’t one “right” way for formulating an essential oil blend.
However, because of their concentration and chemical constituents, care should be taken when looking for therapeutic benefits and using essential oils for healthcare. When creating a blend for its healing benefits, you will want to choose your oils based on their designated properties using the Therapeutic Properties Matrix in Chapter 21or Common Ailments in Chapter 22 and add each oil according to its note. For advanced users, therapeutic blending can also be achieved by selecting your oils based on their chemical constituents and blend according to their chemical percentages covered in Chapter 15, Blending by Chemistry.
Always pay close attention to the contraindications of any essential oil you use in a blend and check the safety guidelines regarding its usage. For instance, if you are creating a blend to aid in an upper respiratory condition such as congestion but suffer from epilepsy, you will not want to use Rosemary as it could cause a seizure.
You will also want to make sure the essential oils you choose for your blend won’t contradict the effect you desire. For instance, if you are creating a blend to enhance deep sleep, you want to avoid using oils that spark energy such as Lemon, keeping you alert and awake.
When creating your formula, one should take inspiration from nature, honoring and maintaining the infinite complexity of its creation without disturbing its balance.
